If you want the most bang for your buck then Asus is the way to go. Previously had two Toshiba Qosimos that had video problems and both failed within a year. I promised myself that I'd never own another Toshiba. Because of my problems with Toshiba, reliability was most important. I read a report by Square Trade ( http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/laptop-reliability-1109/ ) rating Asus at the top in terms of reliability. Who else has the ability & expertise to make reliable systems other than a company that started out making boards for other computer companies? They currently build system boards for other laptop manufacturers. Other manufacturers barely give you a year warranty, Asus without a doubt has the best. You get 2 years, 2 year accidental damage (if you mail the warranty card in within 60 days), otherwise 1 year accident damage, and 30 days zero bright dot on the LCD screen. To get the same warranty coverage with another brand you're going to drop an additional $200-300. The other brand I considered was the Sony Viao EA series, essentially same class of computer. With very similar hardware and nearly equivalent warranties, the Sony will cost about $1150 vs $850 for the Asus. One thing that made me a little wary of Asus is not many stores carry them and don't seem to be very mainstream. The form factor of this computer is great and I believe it's powerful enough to handle a majority of people's needs. The NVIDIA Optimus technology is an added bonus since it reduces power consumption by switching between a discreet graphics card and a more powerful add-on. I'm not going to give a in-depth review of the system performance because I don't know much about that stuff. I love my new laptop. I'm not a computer expert by any stretch. I needed a laptop that could handle running lots of graphics for photo editing and digital scrapbooking ... not gaming. I am a soccer mom and simply take tons of pictures of my kids. I run Adobe PSE 8.0 along with Windows Picture Gallery and often the internet (downloading and uploading images) simulataneously. Portability and reasonable price was also important to me. I have recently had 2 Dells that have failed miserably to live up to my expectations. I had a Dell bought in 2003 that was awesome and based upon that purchased another. That one failed and then I bought yet another figuring any company can have a lemon here or there. Within 2 months I started having the same "early warning" signs that I had with the prior laptop. I decided then to do my homework and go elsewhere. I learned that having a dedicated graphics card would be helpful to what I do with my laptop. After reading countless reviews and articles and visiting every big box store and picking every computer salesperson for information, I ended up with ASUS though I had not heard of them previously. I simply googled ASUS to find a sales venue and I eventually led me to Xotic PC (though I have to admit I was put off by the name and didn't go there first ... sounded like one of "those" sites to me). Andrew helped me with my purchase, actually directed me to a different computer than I had previously been looking at and explained why that computer would not have been a good fit for my needs. I am so happy with this purchase. I have had my new laptop for 2 months now and it is exactly what I was looking for. It is well made, it is very fast, and it has not failed once - no blue screens or unexpected shut-downs or memory dumps. I now plan to look for an ASUS desktop for my kids. I am pleased with both the quality of the product and the customer service. ASUS and XoticPC have earned my business! |
