INTEGRATED VS. DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARDS
There's a very important distinction to make
between Graphics Cards, Integrated and Dedicated.
An integrated GPU is built into the
motherboard. As a result, it will not have its own memory and its
performance is generally severely crippled. The chip itself will be short
several features in order to properly fit into the northbridge of the
motherboard, and it will have to borrow memory from the system RAM. This
takes memory bandwidth from the system itself and can hinder overall system
performance. Integrated Graphics run very cool and have very low power
consumption to maximize battery life.
A dedicated GPU is separate from the
motherboard and generally has its own memory. Dedicated Video offers
superior video and gaming performance but also consumes more power and
provides less battery life. [view dedicated score chart below]
HYPERMEMORY AND TURBOCACHE
ATI and nVidia have developed technologies
that allow the use of system memory as a buffer for graphics performance.
The memory of the dedicated GPU itself expands from your system ram when the
system needs it. The nice thing is that this can offer a healthy and very
inexpensive performance boost for chips that would otherwise provide less
performance. The problem is that system memory is almost always slower
than dedicated GPU memory, so it's no substitute for having dedicated video
memory.
"User Upgradeable"
Video
When you see a label such as this listed after
some of our Video Cards it means the system can be upgraded by the end user
to different cards that are being offered with the system providing these
alternate video card choices. This also means the video card is not
soldered onto the system board and can be physically removed by the user at
a later time. Video Cards that are not soldered on the system are
normally utilizing nVidia's MXM Technology.
For more info on nVidia MXM please go here.
This term does not mean a user will have the ability to upgrade to a newly released card but rather any of the current offered video cards.
