joshua k mortensen - 04/27/2009 So far this thing has survived 7 months in Iraq - Everything about this laptop is amazing, EXCEPT the optical drive. The DVD-drive is worse than any drive I have ever owned out of 5 or 6 computers. It only recognizes half the discs I put in it, and it cost me about $150 in new PC Games I couldn't play because the drive would have an error reading the disc. And of course, the discs worked perfectly on my buddy's laptop. Also, about 3 months after owning it, the drive stopped responding when I would push the eject button. I had to pry it open and flip a latch to get it working again.
I have had zero luck trying to find new drivers for the optical drive.
If you buy this, for god's sake upgrade the DVD-drive to a different, more reliable brand. I made a fatal mistake.
I would give 5/5 stars but the DVD-drive has caused me alot of headaches.
If you found drivers that fix the problem, please e-mail me a link to joshua.mortensen1@us.army.mil |
Tom Humphrey - 12/08/2008 I bought this laptop last month. XOTICPC service was superb! They responded to all of my questions and sent me the model fast - just how I like it. They get 5/5.
However, the model itself has some pro's and con's you should be aware of.
Pro's: Blazing fast. Great looking monitor (I got the glossy type). The overall finish of the case looks very nice. And while I selected 512 MB graphics card I scored about the same in a graphics test against my friends 1024 MB graphics card (almost same make and model).
Con's: No navigation keys on the keyboard (Play, Pause, FF, RR, etc.). The CD-ROM wasn't tightly secured in to the casing (at least in my model) - this caused much noise when the CD-ROM ramped up it's spin rate do-to rattling. I was able to hold it and it was quiet. Another issue with the CD-ROM: the eject button is exactly where you might put your left hand to carry the computer. In just 24 hours I accidentally hit the eject 6 times. Very annoying; overall the case design is nice, except the CD-ROM - subpar assembly. Also, this computer gets HOT - don't even think of actually placing it on your lap. It's fairly thick (it tapers, getting fatter near the back), not exactly the lightest of it's breed either. The case (looks very nice) shows off smudges and fingerprints a little too much - with repeated use makes the keyboard and touchpad region look greasy.
I bought mine and installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I spent all day installing Vista, drivers, etc. When I was done the computer started to Auto-Restart (for no apparent reason) every 15 minutes. However, when I booted to the BIOS screen it did not reset. This is a strong indication that something is wrong with the drivers that come with the laptop. Beware!
I ended up returning the laptop to XOTICPC (no complaints there, they were awesome with the whole return process).
Conclusion: If you are hell-bent on performance, this is a good choice for you. Otherwise I would recommend a different model. |
Timothy Yek - 10/18/2008 I bought this laptop last month and have been utterly satisfied with it. I'm quite particular about what goes into my pc and this company allows me the flexibilty to customize to my hearts desire. Their after sales service is also surpreb, those who say Dell is better in terms of after sales have certianly not meet the people from xoticpc ! Looking forward to my next purchase from here :)

Peter Doan - 08/23/2008 This is my first custom laptop and I think it is AMAZING! My last laptop was a Fujitsu and I decided that this time, I actually wanted to customize and try to make a really decent gaming laptop. I decided this XoticPC because I heard really good reviews from many sites. When I first ordered it, I didn't notice it was a Pre-Order so I had to wait for about a month until it was released. But when it was released (on a Thursday), I got my laptop on the following Tuesday. So it was REALLY fast production on XoticPC on their part.
Everything came perfectly. The packaging was very professionally done and no extra things were installed other than the basics (unlike other computer companies which preload a bunch of random things ___).
The laptop in general is very fast. The webcam is OK, I would prefer my USB one right now over the laptop but its nice to have when I don't have it when traveling. The computer is not light but also not heavy (Probably 6-7 pounds? Not sure). It is a decent size and weight so it is possible to carry around. Mine came with a carrying case which carries everything that came with my laptop plus extra room for other things. I currently play games like CS/WoW/C&C but I will be testing it on more stressing games to see how well this laptop runs but so far for those games, it is AMAZINGLY fast. Everything loads immediately. I will be using this laptop for college too. I have not tested the battery power yet but for the times that I have left it out of battery, it lasted for about an hour and a half before I plugged back in with still about 30-35% battery power left. So I'll assume (with the power in power savings mode) it should last through maybe a 2 hour class without dying.
Overall, an amazing laptop and I will buy again from XoticPC because I am VERY satisfied with their professionalism and product.
